How to Use Conditional Options for Shopify Product Customization

November 3, 2026 · Conditionals, Options

Not every shopper wants engraving. Showing text fields on every PDP creates noise and remake risk (“I didn’t mean to personalize”). Conditional options ask a question first—then reveal personalization fields only when the shopper opts in.

Souvely Product Personalizer supports conditional questions on a personalization rule (AddOn). Affirmative answers can reveal front and/or back surfaces before text or image UI appears. Answers travel with the order as line-item properties.

What conditionals do (verified product behavior)

  • Merchant configures optional Conditional questions in the rule editor (Questions step).
  • Primary merchant UI path: yes/no questions (e.g. “Add engraving?”).
  • Each question can reveal front, reveal back, or both when the shopper answers yes.
  • Until the gate passes, those sides stay hidden in the storefront widget.
  • Answers are recorded on the cart line for ops.
  • Available on Free, Starter, and Unlimited (conditional_options capability).
  • Optional fee (cents) on a question is editable on paid plans; Free can ask questions but cannot charge shoppers at checkout. Conditional fee cents are quoted server-side and are not auto-mapped to Shopify fee variants unless you map them to a fee product later.

When to use them

Use caseExample questionReveals
Optional engraving“Add engraving?”Front text
Optional second side“Also personalize the back?”Back
Gift vs blank“Is this a gift with a custom message?”Front
Skip personalization entirely“Customize this item?”Front + back

Skip conditionals when every buyer must personalize (always-on monogram SKUs)—keep the fields visible by default.

Setup path

  1. Install Souvely Product Personalizer and enable Souvely storefront.
  2. Create or open a personalization rule with front and/or back enabled as needed.
  3. Open the Conditional questions (optional) step in the rule editor.
  4. Click Add yes/no question, write a clear label, and check Reveals front / Reveals back.
  5. On Starter/Unlimited, optionally set fee (cents) for an affirmative answer—then plan how that maps to a checkout fee product if you need automatic charging.
  6. Save, assign the rule, and test on the storefront: fields stay hidden until “yes”; “no” keeps them closed.

Storefront behavior shoppers see

  1. Question block appears above personalization fields.
  2. Yes/no controls collect the answer.
  3. Affirmative answers reveal the configured side(s); preview and text/image UI follow your rule.
  4. Add to cart includes the question label + answer with other personalization properties.

Common mistakes

MistakeFix
Question with no revealsCheck Reveals front and/or back
Enabling back reveal when back is disabled on the ruleEnable the side first
Expecting conditional fee cents to appear as checkout lines automaticallyMap to a fee product on paid plans, or use per-side text/image fees
Vague question copyUse a single clear yes/no (“Add engraving?”)
Forcing always-on text behind a useless gateRemove the question for must-personalize SKUs

Hypothetical example

Example (illustrative): A jewelry merchant sells the same bar necklace blank and personalized. One yes/no question—“Add engraving?”—reveals front text only when shoppers say yes. Blank buyers add to cart without fields; gift buyers type a name, see the preview, and checkout with the answer on the line item.
