How to Sell Custom Products That Require Quotes on Shopify
Engraving, made-to-order builds, and configured kits often cannot sit behind a single Add to Cart price. Shoppers still need a clear path from the product page to a formal quote—with the specs your team needs to price the work.
Pattern that works
- Enable quoting for custom SKUs or collections via Rules.
- Optionally replace Add to Cart / hide price on Unlimited so the page pushes Request a Quote.
- Collect specifications on the request form with custom fields and, when you enable them, file attachments.
- Price in admin, send a PDF, and convert acceptance to a Shopify draft order.
How merchants collect custom specifications
Under Request form → custom fields, add the questions that change cost or production:
- Text / textarea (inscription copy, special instructions)
- Dropdown (finish, material)
- Number (panel count, set size)
- Date (needed-by)
- Checkbox (rush)
Require the fields that block production. Leave nice-to-haves optional. Do not recreate builtin keys (company, email, etc.) as custom fields—the app blocks those collisions.
Require field rules can also force builtins or custom keys when a product matches a rule.
Customer file uploads — accurate claim
When attachments are enabled in Request form, buyers can upload PDF, PNG, JPG, or WEBP within the limits you configure (defaults commonly up to 5 files / 8 MB each; admin caps up to 10 files / 15 MB).
- Attachments are optional infrastructure—enable them when artwork or drawings matter.
- The customer upload path is not a general CAD/ZIP drop zone.
- If attachments stay disabled, the form will not collect files.
Attachments are optional. Enable them in Request form only when you need files with the request; leave them off when you do not.
Hypothetical example
Example (illustrative): A awards shop enables quoting on “Engraved plaques,” requires a textarea for inscription and a dropdown for metal finish, and turns on attachments for a PNG layout. Sales prices after reviewing the file, then sends a portal quote.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Advertising “any file type” uploads | Stick to PDF/PNG/JPG/WEBP |
| Promising uploads while attachments are off | Enable in Request form |
| Forcing every product through quotes | Scope Rules to custom collections only |
| Duplicate custom field keys/labels | Use unique keys; avoid builtin names |
